Breaking News

Prime Video has officially ordered a television adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy novel Fourth Wing, sources confirmed Tuesday. The streaming giant is accelerating its investment in epic fantasy after the recent cancellation of The Wheel of Time.

The project will be developed by Yarros herself alongside showrunner Emily Carmichael, known for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Production is expected to begin in early 2025, with casting announcements anticipated later this year.

Fourth Wing is a cultural phenomenon that perfectly blends high-stakes fantasy with a gripping romance,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We are thrilled to bring this dragon-filled world to life for our global audience.”

Industry insiders note the order follows Prime Video’s renewed focus on franchise IP. Read more background below.

Background

Fourth Wing (2023) is the first book in Yarros’ Empyrean series, which follows Violet Sorrengail as she navigates a brutal dragon-riding academy. The novel spent over 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Rights for the series were acquired by Amazon Studios in a competitive bidding war last year. The adaptation will span multiple seasons, with Yarros reportedly outlining a five-book arc for the series.

This order comes just months after Prime Video canceled The Wheel of Time after three seasons. “Fans were devastated by Wheel of Time’s end, but Fourth Wing offers a fresh—and equally ambitious—fantasy epic,” said Dr. Sarah Lynne Bowman, a scholar of fantasy media at Austin Community College.

What This Means

The Fourth Wing adaptation signals Amazon’s strategy to double down on fantasy properties with built-in fanbases. Unlike the more niche appeal of Robert Jordan’s series, Yarros’ books have crossed over into mainstream pop culture through viral TikTok campaigns and strong word-of-mouth.

Fourth Wing has the potential to be Prime Video’s Game of Thrones—a massive, water-cooler hit that drives subscriptions and merchandise sales,” explained Matt Bailey, media analyst at Enders Analysis. “The key will be capturing both the romance and the dragon action that made the books so addictive.”

For fans of the genre, this announcement provides a clear replacement for The Wheel of Time gap. Current subscribers can expect a release window of late 2026 at the earliest, based on production timelines.

“This isn’t just another fantasy show—it’s a cultural touchstone,” added Yarros in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Amazon for trusting my vision and giving the dragons the screen they deserve.”
